Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Recipe

Grilled cheese is a staple for many of us. It's quick, delicious, and has this nostalgic quality that always hits the spot. This version, made in the air fryer, takes it to a whole new level. The air fryer provides that perfect crispy exterior while ensuring your cheese oozes and bubbles on the inside.

Ingredients

  • To whip up this delicious air fryer grilled cheese you’ll need the following ingredients:
  • - 4 thick slices of white bread
  • - 2 slices of sharp cheddar cheese sliced thin
  • - 2 slices of Swiss cheese or your choice of melty cheese like Monterey Jack or Fontina
  • - 2 tablespoons of butter for spreading
  • - 1 tablespoon of garlic powder adds an extra kick of flavor
  • - A pinch of salt and pepper to taste
  • Feel free to adjust the types of cheese based on personal preference. The traditional duo of cheddar and Swiss makes for a delightful combination.

Equipment

  • Air fryer
  • butter knife
  • toothpick

Method

Step 1: Preheat Your Air Fryer
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 370°F (188°C). Preheating is essential because it guarantees that your sandwich cooks evenly from the moment it hits the basket.
Step 2: Prepare Your Sandwiches
  1. Butter the outer sides of the bread slices generously. This not only aids in crisping the bread but also adds that rich, buttery flavor. Layer the cheese in the center. Place one slice of cheddar and one slice of Swiss, or mix up the cheeses according to your taste.
  2. For extra flavor, sprinkle a pinch of garlic powder and a dash of salt and pepper on the cheese before putting the top slice on. If you find your bread is particularly thin, secure the sandwich with a toothpick so the top doesn’t pop off during cooking.
Step 3: Air Fry the Sandwiches
  1. Now, place the assembled sandwiches in the air fryer basket. Set them in a single layer for even cooking. Air fry at 370°F for 5 to 6 minutes. Halfway through cooking, flip the sandwiches carefully to ensure both sides achieve that glorious golden brown. Keep an eye on them; depending on your bread type, you may want to adjust the cooking time.
Step 4: Finish Up
  1. Once they’re perfectly toasted, remove the sandwiches from the air fryer. Don’t forget to take out any toothpicks before serving. If you’ve done it right, your sandwiches will have that irresistible crunch on the outside and melty goodness inside.

Notes

- Don’t Skimp on Butter: A generous layer of butter goes a long way in crisping the bread.
- Use Quality Cheese: Taste matters! Use good quality cheese that melts well to elevate your sandwich experience.
- Watch the Time: Air fryers vary in power, so start with 5 minutes and adjust as necessary.
- Try Different Breads: While I love white bread, sourdough or whole grain can also add delicious flavors and textures.
- Experiment with Fillings: Try adding extras such as sliced tomatoes, cooked bacon, or even a smear of pesto for added flavor.
